The bike rack fixes onto brackets which are installed behind the number plate and at the top of the inside of the back door. These brackets are then left on the car and when required the bike rack then hangs off these brackets.

The first thing you'll need to do is remove the number plate. There should be four screws holding the plate on. Behind the number plate should look like picture no2. If you have a pre 2001 model then Mercedes didnt see fit to put the stickers over the holes.

Peel the stickers off, but dont throw then away, you can put them back on at some later date. You should be able to see the holes for the bottom brackets.Inside these holes is a bolt which is glued inside the door. The bottom brackets should be placed on the door and the allen bolts inserted into these. DON'T tighten these up yet. You also might want to put a little bit of cloth or rubber on the back in between the bracket and the door. MB havent spent great time on the finish of these and they could scratch the door. I have a piece of rubber cut to the shape of the bracket behind mine.

You should now have the bottom brackets looking like this. They should move pretty easily as they need to be adjusted and tightened once the bike rack is about to be placed for the first time.

Next you need to install the top brackets.

Open the back door and then look in the top corners of the door. You should see two bolts similair to the holes behind the number plate. The top brackets attach to these. Pretty easy as they will only go on the door one way. The bracket is shaped like a letter "J" and the cut in the bracket should be facing upwards when the bracket is installed on the door.

Tighten the brackets as these are not adjustable. Close the door and they should look like below.

Just a quick note: You cannot go through a car wash with these on the car. Well you can but its recommended that you dont!

The top brackets come with a cover for use when the bike rack isn't on the car and look like the next picture. However they are really difficult to take off when left on the car for a while and my tip for taking them off is to push the top and bottom inturn as if your wiggling them off, don't put oil or grease on them as you WILL loose them.

Okay, by now all the brackets should be on the car and now its time to put the rack on to the car.

Pick the rack up and the bolts on the top of the rack should be placed on the U shaped part of the top bracket then the bottom of the rack should come to rest on the bottom brackets.

You need to tighten the brackets at the top before you adjust the tightness of the bottom brackets. Once they are tight, line the holes in the bottom of the rack with the holes in the bottom brackets and then insert the bolts and tighten until the bike rack is lined up. Now tighten the bottom brackets up, tight.

You can now replace your number plate.

The bike rack is now on the car and lined up for next time you want to use it. To remove the bike rack just undo the bolts at the top and the bottom and lift it off.

Here are a few pictures of the bike rack in place so you can see the height of the rack and the bikes in it.

Hope this is useful to somebody.
